What would be the smartest financial decision? Video Game Programming or Robotics Programmuing?

I love them both but I need to choose the smartest one. I would feel much more satisfied knowing I programmed a robot that landed on another planet and made discoveries as to releasing the next "big" video game. But I just don't know. I am 20 and still new to college. I am currently in for video game programming.

What would be the smartest financial decision? Video Game Programming or Robotics Programmuing?
Video Programming and Design is "hot" right now. Georgia Tech, a very exclusive engineering university in downtown Atlanta, now offers a "degree" in this area. This is a business that grows each year with "all ages" purchasing, playing, all over the world. Anticipation of "new" games only "fuels" the "craze".

Robotic Programming touches different avenues. Utilized by many government agencies, manufacturing, etc. this is a growing industry, as well. Robotics is used by the military, NASA, auto manufacturers, and very demanding by others. There maybe one drawback for some, the idea of "service". My cousin is "brilliant" to say the least, graduate of Georgia Tech in Electrical Engineering, in 1980's "hired" by a new robotics company, and began a career selling, designing, training, and extremely successful. His dad, my uncle, was a V.P. for General Motors in Atlanta and went to see what his son was up to in business. Discussion came up of possibilities to assembly of automobiles. Needless to say, a success story for my cousin and the automobile industry, but he is on call everyday, at times, stays at the GM plant in North Atlanta for days, servicing, reprogramming, updating, etc.

Financially, either, but if you "love" video games do something you really enjoy, Video Game Programming. Remember as well, competition in the job market is "dog eat dog". Maintain high GPA and look into an "intern" program to participate.

Good Luck, stay focused on your "goals".
Reply:Future is going to be in robotics. Smartest financial decision is video game programming.

How do networks know how many viewers are tuning in to watch their programming?

Just curious as to how major networks measure how many viewers are tuning in to watch their various shows/programming. Thanks!

How do networks know how many viewers are tuning in to watch their programming?
Albotros is on the right path but here are some additional details.

Nielsen surveys a sample group in each city. They make sure the sample size (though often very very small) is an exact replica of the cities age, sex, race, working/unemployeed, etc. If 10% are hispanic men between the ages of 18-24, then 10% of their sample size will be sent to hispanic men 18-24. Since the samle is an exact mock up of the city, they then assume that everyone in the city watches the same way and just multiply it out. (ie if the city is one million people and has 10% men18-24, or 100,000. They may send out the survey to 100 of them. Of the 100, 10 watched show X - or 10%. They then take that 10% and assume the 100,000 men 18-24, 10,000 of them watched that show because their survey said 10%.

The way the survey is done is dependant on the city. A small city is done by "dairies". They ask the sample group to write down what they watch. This is done four months out of the year (Feb, May, July, Nov) and this is why you networks have Sweeps where all the shows are great and nothing is in rerun during these months - except July. The diary system is not very accurate because people often dont take the time to fill it out and when they do it is usually at the end of the week and they are trying to remember what they watched.

In medium cities they have "Meters". This is a device hooked up to your tv that records what you watch. This is more accurate than "diaries" but still cannot tell who in the home watched (the wife, the husband, a friend that was over). They use the meters for daily viewing records but still use diaries during sweeps to determine who was watching.

The major cities (NY, Chicago, LA, Boston, Dallas, etc) use "People Meters". These are devices put in the home that not only record what is being watched but who it was watching it. More cities are rolling out with this each month. Because the networks own many of the tv stations in major citites it effects them the most. This is why you are seeing more programming than ever before, mid season replacemnets, reality shows during the summer, etc. As more and more cities get these, the era of Sweeps will be over as measurements are taken daily.

Peopbably more info than you wanted. Sorry for the lecture but I hope you found it informative.
Reply:Just like a phone company knows who you called. Not sure how it works out but someone figures out that crap.
Reply:It called the nielsen rating. Randomely selected people from different demographics have a device set up to their tv which will send information on what kind of programming is being watched.
Reply:They do telephone surveys and also have selected families complete a log of their viewing habits for an entire month. From that they can extrapolate to the wider viewing audience.
Reply:Supposedly certain people agree to have chips installed in their TV's (and car radios) and those chips send out information regarding which channels are watched/listened to, and general numbers are assumed based on those chips.

However, I am pretty sure that every TV and radio comes with a chip. Otherwise they would not be able to say "2.8 million viewers" etc. I have an advanced degree in advertising and we still never got a straight answer about this from any of our professors.

What are some good ways to start game programming?

Please tell me what language I should start with, and if you know any books that have helped you please let me know. I cannot afford classes, but I would like to self teach myself.

I learn best with books that take you through actual examples, and challange you to create a certain game/program every chapter or so.

My goal is to learn at least how to program something like a simple nintendo (original) game. Like Super Mario Bros, Zelda, or Rygar.

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

What are some good ways to start game programming?
Try Flash, learning ActionScript for Flash is probably one of the easier routes and Flash is fairly easy to master if you keep at it. It would allow you to make Sprite games like you're referring to for the web. It also allows you to control all aspects of the development. If you were going to work in the game industry, you'd most likely just learn one particular aspect of game design, such as a 3D modeller or the programming aspects.

For Flash tutorials try : Flashkit.com/tutorials

This guy offers some pretty good tutorials too : http://www.freeflashtutorials.com/lesson...

Do I need a local permit to do programming consulting work at home?

Do I need a local permit to do programming consulting work at home? I don't expect any visitors. I just want to use the home office to do programming work and want to deduct some tax. Thanks.

Do I need a local permit to do programming consulting work at home?
You can check in the phone book's gov't page under licensing to determine if your locale will require a license. As for the home office deduction - this is one of the IRS's biggest flags on returns. In order to use a home office, the 'office' must be used exclusively for business. You cannot place a home office on your tax return if you business is run out of your den, your living room or from your dining room table. It must be used exclusively for the conduct of your business, and strangely as it may seem, if you choose to do your personal banking or web surfing from that room, you immediately disprove the allowance. IE: you have a spare bedroom that you can convert into an office. Wonderful, then remove the bed, cause once you have a guest, it is just a space in a spare room. However, you can use that space as your home office on your tax returns. The secret is this: You need to measure the size of the 'space' or room you have dedicated to your home office and prorate that to the rest of the house. If the space or room is 5x5 and the rest of the houe is 10x10 then you need to figure the percentage of the house that is taken up by the space/room. which in this case is (i think) to be about 25% (5x5 being 25, and 10x10 being 100). If I figured correctly, then you may ONLY deduct 25% of your homes utilities, (light, heat, water, sewer or septic, etc) rent or mortgage, insurance and what other expenses you may have for your house.

I would visit the IRS's website and find out more by searching 'home office deduction' or 'business use of the home'. Publication 587 is the one you want.

hope this helps - good luck with your business.
Reply:You wanted to say " I want to save some tax " ? Assuming this to be the intention , I may inform you that there is absolutely no need to have a licence to start business on a small scale . This is about India . I do not know about the rules in the country you are living . But it should be allowed without a permit . If the permit does not cost you anything , better have it. I would suggest even paying fees --to get the local permit ---if it is not big enough .

Does the United States have programs to help the homeless?

Like people to give them a temporary home and help them find jobs.

Where should I start to learn more about home computer repair and programming?
If you would like to program you might want to purchase a book about it. It can come in very handy. Most book stores carry them. One of the most useful things you can do to learn about the computer is to start using it more and taking risk. Experience is the best way to learn. Try listening to Tech podcast too. You can learn a lot of whats happening.

Cnets Buzz Out Loud Podcast is one of my favorites.

http://bol.cnet.com
Reply:Mostly through experience helps. Try to find a friend that knows a lot about computers and ask that friend some questions. Or when your computer goes weird and somebody needs to fix it, ask whoever is doing the fixing what to do in case it should happen again.
Reply:Computer repair and programming are two separate things. I'd focus on one or the other. For computer repair, get yourself an old computer, maybe from a classified ad. Then, have at it. Use it as a test computer to learn on. Mistakes are a good thing because that's how you learn.

Is there any govt programs availible to help convert your house to solar energy?

I have always wanted to find better means of providing energy for my house. Since "Green" is the new buzzword on the lips and hearts of all, I was wondering if the government had any grant programs to help "green" up your house?

Is there any govt programs availible to help convert your house to solar energy?
There are various state and federal programs available. It mainly depends where you live and various specs about your house and your income, etc. Check these links out and see what is available where you live. It will generally be in the form of tax credits, so if your income is low enough where you don't pay taxes, you may not be able to benefit from these programs. But hey - check it out and give it a shot.

Reply:Contact your local electrically provider. They will usually have information on these programs. The state of Florida offers a nice package to go solar with your water tank. It still costs more up front, but over the life of the unit, it pays for itself.

What is the best programming language to develop applications?

What is the best programming language to develop applications

Please advice both for desktop and web applications.

What are the advantages of learning C++

What is the best programming language to develop applications?
The advantages of learning C++ is that is will teach you the flow and design of programming. It is a common language and similar in many aspects to Java, so the cross over is simple should you choose to learn that as well.

I prefer VB and its variants. It is a core for the Windows platform and it is simple to get into VBA from there.

The big question is what do you want to do as a programmer? Learn C++, then try another language like VB.net or Java. Keep in mind that the language you create something in dictates the actual coding, but the logic behind it is what truly counts.
Reply:The requirements for the application should dictate technology choice. You have to figure out things like: How important is time to market/development time? What is the expected life-span of the product? Is there a software ecosystem already in place which would dictate requirements? How do users access the application?
Reply:they all have positives and negatives. Chances are, unless you are starting your own company you will not get to choose.

C++ is a good starting point for Object Oriented Programming and desktop applications.

garden furniture

What is the easiest programming language to learn?

So, if I wanted to get into programming, what is the easiest language to learn and why?

Also, what is the different purpose of each language?

What is the easiest programming language to learn?
Highly opinionated question, but I'd say Java is easiest. However, the best starting place would probably be C, although it's more difficult.

A language in and of itself doesn't have a specific purpose, but every language has its strengths and weaknesses. You should pick a language based on the needs of the job at hand.
Reply:I think you should start directly from C++ or C+. Because to me, everything is easy as long as you start it right.

So, C is a great language that can create programs and system environments for many computer systems. You can start with small items such as basic .exe run and type "hello world" and then grow in to it. It is better to learn something that you can grow into than just learn something like PHP web server based programming and then hit a wall.
Reply:Easiest would probably be VB.net, C# or Basic. It is easy syntax to fallow.

There are many different laguages to propgram in....VB, C#, C++, python, java, Basic.

Things to consider when you want to start programing:

-What are you after? If it is hardware intensive..you want to use C.

-Simple to moderate aplications or database interfaces. VB or C#.

-Do you want to program in windows?if not then forget vb and c#

I would suggest that if you want to learn something quick to just make applications in windows then use C#. The syntax is close to most other languages out there. That would make it easy to learn other languages. Most programs after a while end up wanting to go into C for the control that you have.

Also if you do choose vb or c# or visual C++ you can download software for free from microsoft to work on it.
Reply:I'm going to tell you to start by learning either Java or C#. Both are very similar so learning one will make it easy to grasp the other.

A scripting language would really be the easiest thing to learn, but a more structured language like Java, C#, C++, etc. would be better for you. The good thing is that once you learn one language, it becomes easier to learn another. The more you know about a language the better.

Some advice:

- Comment, Comment, Comment

No one likes to take on code that's hard to understand, and you'll be happy that you made comments when you leave the code for a year and come back to it.

- Object Oriented

This helps to confine the scope of any piece of code. Using Java and C# will definitely get you going in this direction. Soon you'll be saying "I don't care how it works, just as long as it works".

- Best Practices

Once you get that down you should try to improve your skills by using good design structures, etc. Your experiences will surely teach you a thing or two. Get/Set methods (Java), Properties (C#)

That's it for now. :)
Reply:Rosetta Stone. It's a very helpful program that has taught millions of people across the world learn many new languages like Russian, German, Spanish, etc.

The purpose of each language is to know what other countries are saying when it comes to trade or war with that country.

...Okay, I'm guessing that you're not asking about languages, you're talking about computer language programs. Sorry, but I have no idea then.
Reply:Hi.

In theory all languages are easy to learn, it depends on your experience and comfort levels with computers. Languages such as Java or C (C++, C# etc) are fairly plain english languages. Visual Basic is reasonably simple as well. Depends what sort of thing you want to do. If you want simple functionality or full blown 3D graphics will nearly decide your choice for you. Things like Java and C are good all rounders in general and there are lots of resources out there to help you out.
Reply:The easiest? Of course it would be BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. Why? The name says it all.

Individual Languages have specific types of applications that they work best on i.e. networking, firmware, games, design, etc.
Reply:i think visual basic is best for beginners;

different languages can focus on different types of data structures , some are object oriented as well, like c.

I need help studying for computer programming gates, like drawings, truth tables?
Just remember the rules for each:

AND = both have to be TRUE

OR = at least one has to be true

XOR = one, and only one, are true

NAND = false only if both are true

NOR = true only if both are false

~ = changes T -%26gt; F, F -%26gt; T

What am I looking forward to in the game and simulation programming field?

I'm starting college in January. I'm majoring in Game and Simulation Programming. What are the perks? What is the salary? What is the work environment like?

What am I looking forward to in the game and simulation programming field?
It about the same as many programming jobs, everything depends on your employer, your skill your knowledge and the quality of your work product.

The market tends to be diverse. One friend was working from home, picked his own hours, and made good money. Some did it part time and on the side and made little money. Others worked either for the government or as a government contractor in a research environment where they develop game and simulation software for use by the DOD and their contractors. At one time they had the best toys (now days I think there just average) and made good money doing what if they didn't have to make a living, they do for free. About the only bad things was thier work environment (ugly offices with strange odors).

I have been discouraging people from entering the programming field, but I do believe that gaming and simulations is one area which will continue to grow.

Can somebody please help me create a website like myspace, which is an application programming?? Thanks?

I would like more information about creating programized applications, such as myspace, facebook, hi5, youtube, ect. If someone knows about any websites, programs [it would be nice if they didn't cost too much] and such, I would really appreciate your help. Also, please try to make the things simpler, since I'm not a pro, but I am willing to learn. Thanks

Can somebody please help me create a website like myspace, which is an application programming?? Thanks?
The applications for those websites are not software you can just buy, they are programmed specially for the specific website, usually by the company that runs the website. They hire programmers to write and maintain the code.

If you want to learn web programming, the best way is going to school, if not, you can self teach yourself, Microsoft WebDev 2005 Express and Microsoft C# 2005 Express can be downloaded for FREE from microsoft.com. They have lots of documentation and samples.

Start by learning HTML and then JavaScipt, once you learn that start working on Server Side scripts such as ASP.net or PHP. Take a step at the time.

Is there a good program to help me punch up my resume?

I'm having a hard time finding a job (Still), and I am thinking that part of the problem lies with my resume. There were a couple of positions that I had had that I didn't stay with because of things that I had been promised, but they didn't give me. One interviewer asked me why I had only been with one of my previous employers 3 months. I was honest, but wasn't blunt about it. Does anyone know of anyone or anything program wise that might be able to help?

Is there a good program to help me punch up my resume?
You may want to use a Functional Resume, which focuses on your skills %26amp; accomplishments rather than your employment history.

You will still most likely deal with the interviewer's questions, but try to answer them in a positive note that focuses on the employer's need.

Is there a program that will help pay for daycare while you (the mom) is going to college?

I'm about half way through my first semester. I live in Alabama by the way; I know there are probably different programs for different states and so on. My son is one and i think he is just about ready for daycare. I think it would do him good to be able to play with other kids and "socialize" if you know what i mean. We just can't afford $100 a week or whatever it is running now a days. Thanks for your help.

Is there a program that will help pay for daycare while you (the mom) is going to college?
Yes there is. I am from Alabama myself and also a home daycare provider. You can either go through DHR and see if you qualify through their program or you can go through Child Care Central if you have one in your area. Call your local Dept of human resources to see if they have either option. There is usually at least one of those options. Right now I have one child that will start in 2 weeks and her mom will go through our county DHR. They will pay at least $40 a week and you will have to pay the rest. They sometimes will go up to the full amount depending on income and how well you are doing in school and at work. I do think if you go through DHR you must be working part-time while going to school but I am not sure about that. I only charge $75 a week but the range in our area is $65-$95. Of course we live in a small town so I am sure the bigger areas range much higher. Good luck! If you need more help email me.
Reply:There's some colleges that have daycare inside the schools (daycares in colleges provide a place for education majors to observe/get experience in teaching/taking care of children) ask your college if they have a daycare program.
Reply:check with the social service office near you
Reply:Talk to the Department of Human Services (DHS). They have a daycare assistance program here in OK. I'm sure they have something similar in Alabama. Good luck!
Reply:Your college might have a daycare center. The would also know about county subsidies that are available.
Reply:Go to your local Medicaid office Ask if they have a program that helps working parents/school parents put their children in day care. That should help. In fla it is called YFA see if that helps. Karen
Reply:Go to your county Department of Social Services. They have a program that pays daycare for mothers who work or are continuing their education.

Reply:Most colleges have daycares on campus. Check with your school, or the student service office.

Another idea is to post a flier at your school for daycare swaps with other student moms. Perhaps you could find someone who has classes on the days you don't, and then it would be free.
Reply:Yes I dont know if you have one in your area but try Child care resources you can google it or look up child care subsidies

I am taking computer programming and I am learning about this thing and need some help understanding it...?

I have just a few questions for you:

1. What does PIC stand for?

2. What is it used for?

Anything else helpful about the PIC microcontroller would be great. Thank you!

I am taking computer programming and I am learning about this thing and need some help understanding it...?
PIC is the brand name for a small 8 bit micro-controller made by

the Microchip company. It has memory, an accumulator, inputs, outputs, and logic branch instructions.

Is there any programs to help pay for medication when you don't have insurance?

I recently switched jobs and now have no health insurance. The insurance my job offers is very expensive. I take medication each month and can have side effects if I stop taking them so does anyone know of any programs out there that can help me?

Is there any programs to help pay for medication when you don't have insurance?
You didn't mention which ones they were. *Admittedly I hate them, but....* Wal-Mart has a $4 prescription program. If your Rx are on their program list, then you're set.
Reply:YES!! Every drug company sponsors some sort of program. But there are also other programs out there that have information about all of them. The most common one is: pparx.org .But you can google the term perscription assistance and get others. But be sure you don't pay to get this information. It is FREE to get. If you have to pay for the information, you are being scammed. You can also check the manufactures website of the drugs your on. If you don't know the name, just ask your pharmacist, he/she should be able to tell you easily.
Reply:Depending what your income is you might look at

RXOutreach.com I use it for my Zoloft and heart medicine, a 90 prescription of Zoloft is $30, you can check their list to be sure but I would think that they also have Ativan.

My doctor told me about them 2 yrs ago and I have had no trouble with them what so ever. Its been a great help to me!!

You do need to have you doctor write your prescriptions for 90 day supplies though.

Hope this helps

Reply:Sometimes the drug manufacturers have discount/free medication programs for those who can't afford them. Ask your doctor about it.
Reply:if you live in the US the only way you might get help is if you are low income. You might qualify for Medicaid or for programs run by the drug companies. Meds are just one thing you need to be concerned about. What will you do if you have to go to the hospital without insurance? If that happens you will wish you signed up for the expensive insurance. Next time you switch jobs make sure that the salary increase covers the insurance costs plus some extra.

2- if you know about this can you help me plz or email me if u want to ask more and know more to help me no_limit_mafia@yahoo.com

i really need you help and i will never forget ur help

thank alot i love you all

Is there any good in language programming i need ur help?
use ASP (active server pagee)
Reply:Are you sure there isn't already a Web site or program that will translate your language to English and back? Have you tried Babelfish? What's your native language, anyway?
Reply:use visual BASIC (Beginner's All-Purpose Symbolic Instructions Code) - it's very easy to learn.
Reply:why not use one that's already out there, rather than making your own?

try http://www.google.com/language_tools
Reply:To just set up a dictionary, you can use a database system to store the associations, and then a client application to search the database. The client application can be simple since it is mostly just a presentation layor for the database. You can use VB with ADO to access the database to enter words, and to lookup words.

Automated translation is still an active research topic. Developing such a system is non-trivial (years of R%26amp;D). There are 2 main approaches to it. First is to write a program that uses the Grammar of the language and a database of associations between source and target language words to to the tranlation. These are computationally intensive, and do a poor job of translation, because the computer does not adequately deal with context and shades of meaning that many words/phrases have. The second approach uses statistical associations in the source and destination lanaguages based on texts that have been translated by a human translator. These translations are relatively quick and accurate, but it is conceptually harder to characterize/explain how/why it works.
Reply:You have a big job ahead of you.

One of the easiest to use (and learn) yet most capable languages around is Python.

You probably will want to add a database for all your words. You can get MySQL for free. It uses SQL and is fast.

Both are free and run on mac, windows, linux and more.

How can I help my husband get an alcohol treatment program?

I am fed up of my husband's nightly drinking and daily hangovers. I have been telling him to quit drinking but nothing works. How do I help him find an alcohol treatment program?

How can I help my husband get an alcohol treatment program?
Alcohol consumption can either be an advantage or a disadvantage to the drinker depending on the amount consumed. Because some liquors like wine have been proven to help prevent cardiovascular disease, it doesn't mean these should be taken in large amounts. In fact, one drink a day is enough. Moderate drinking can be defined as a point wherein the health benefits of alcohol are much more than its risks. Drinking alcohol in huge amounts could lead to heart failure and liver disease. Changes in behavior may also occur because alcohol attacks the brain, too. All this tells us how having horrible hangovers can be the least disadvantage in being an alcoholic.

A very strict discipline is needed in controlling oneself to drink moderately. And this may already help a recovering alcoholic, but then there are some people who just can't stop their cravings. This is when an alcohol treatment program comes in.

Your husband is fortunate that there are now many effective treatments he can choose from. And getting himself into an alcohol treatment program will help me develop the self-discipline he needs. The extent of his alcohol dependence will help determine what kind of treatment is best for him. Alcohol treatment programs include psychological therapies, group and interpersonal therapies and recovery sessions.

I am sure that your husband, with your support and an alcohol treatment program, can overcome alcoholism and lead a normal life again.
Reply:He's the only one who can do this, and it will only work if he does it for himself.

In the meantime, you need to find your closest Al Anon group and join it.
Reply:AA is the only program that works. You need to stage a confrontation with his friends and family present.
Reply:Stephanie, if he won't do it on his own, he won't do it. I'm sorry to be so negative about it, but it's just the reality. It'll drive you nuts to keep trying to get him to do what he obviously needs. I know. I buried two of them. You can try contacting the show, "Intervention." They help people conduct a true intervention, which helps some people. It's on Fridays on a cable channel, if you want to watch it for yourself. Some professional alcohol and drug counselors do this privately, too. The show may have some resources on their website.

You must do what you need to do for yourself. Take care of your own health, well-being,and growth. He may not choose to grow with you. You have to accept that. Don't spend years pulling your hair out. Set a bottom line, and stick to it.
Reply:does your husband want the help? if he does, take him to the local ER -alcohol withdrawals can be fatal. the ER doctor will set him up with appropriate treatment and get him medical care. if he doesn't want the help, figure out what you will do with the rest of your life.

Does anyone have the programming instructions for a auto keyless entry remote for a 04 civic?

please help me out, can't find the programming instructions

Does anyone have the programming instructions for a auto keyless entry remote for a 04 civic?
This worked for me on my 03 Civic - be sure to check out the link, too!

This procedure clears the transmitter codes and creates new ones, so you must program all remotes at the same time, even if one or more is already working.

Enter the car, and close all doors.

Each of the following steps must be completed within five seconds of completing the previous step. If you take longer or make a mistake, start the entire procedure over again.

Insert the key into the ignition, and hold one remote in your left hand. Whenever the instructions say to press the LOCK button, you should press the lock button on the remote for about a second and then release it.

Perform each of the following three steps in order, then repeat all three steps two more times, for a total of three times each:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, marked II.

2. Press the LOCK button.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position, marked I.

Do this three times!

Next, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (II) for a fourth time.

Press the LOCK button again. The door locks should now make a cycling sound, indicating that the system has entered Programming Mode.

Press the LOCK button one more time to program this remote. If you have other remotes to program, press the LOCK button on each one in turn. The door locks should make the cycling sound after you press LOCK on each remote. You may program up to three remotes, and they must all be programmed within ten seconds of each other.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key. The remotes are now programmed and may be tested.

If you've got a trunk/hatch release, hold the button for this function for a few seconds.

How much programming knowledge is required to create an internet company?

Specifically, I am referring to the giant companies like Facebook and Myspace. How much programming knowledge and/or experience is required to create those websites? Could a college CS major do something like that?

How much programming knowledge is required to create an internet company?
Truely, you'll need knowledge of all of the above and also probably shell scripting knowledge and so on, a Computer Science Major should be able to get the job done, as during all of those studies you'll have the opportunity to work with each piece, php, mysql, web servers (which should involve shell scripting depending on which servers you work with), html, etc.
Reply:HTML - easy to learn, essential for website creation.

Java - not required but useful.

SQL - for a myspace-like site, I would recommend this.

Flash - to make web sites really fancy.
Reply:Myspace and Facebook was made by servers and Internet languages maybe like HTML.

HTML is very important for a company. If you are planning on going to school for that, make sure you are willing to go do some "company" classes and loads of Programming Classes as well. You will probably need alot of knowledge if it is going to be just you. If not, then you could probably get people to work for you and do some of the programming for you.
Reply:Well for a site like those you will need some sort of database knowledge and also knowledge of a scripting language such as PHP or ASP. When you know those it would be possible to make a site like the above. Whether it is a sucess or not depends on your level of experience and the time you put into it.

What is the difference between procedural and object orientated programming?

As I understand it, or rather don't, the basic premise of object orientated programming is that components of source code are reusable.

Surely this is also the case with procedures, as that same chunk of code can be used ad infinitum?

Please do be concise but avoid overly technical jargon. Thanks.

What is the difference between procedural and object orientated programming?
You are right on both counts. Both OO and procedural can be reused if well written.

I've been programming for 5 years, and I learned by object oriented programming, so I can't imagine doing it any other way.

And I'm not gonna pretend to be able to give you a good answer on this topic in such a short space. But I will forward you some links.

This is a good article on the subject:

http://devzone.zend.com/node/view/id/123...
Reply:Object-oriented programming (OOP) is a programming paradigm that uses "objects" and their interactions to design applications and computer programs.

Procedural programming is sometimes used as a synonym for imperative programming (specifying the steps the program must take to reach the desired state), but can also refer (as in this article) to a programming paradigm based upon the concept of the procedure call.
Reply:Both can be reused in code, but object oriented programming makes it a lot easier.

Procedural program provides the methodology to state how to perform a set of work on data. This relies on the fact that every procedure in your program uses the data the same way and cooperates. If this is true for your program and everyone that uses the program then a high rate of re-use can be achieved.

Object oriented programming languages encapsulate the data and the procedures together as a tight unit. Since the object data for the object is only used by procedures (functions, methods) of the object a high amount of data understanding is ensured and the entire module data and function can be re-used.

As a metaphor, you want to fill out a tax return. In a procedural language you would create the logic for how to fill out a tax return, then later you would give that procedure data and hope that it is for the correct state. In an object oriented language you could not make this mistake since the logic for a tax return and the data for that tax return are bonded together. The rules for how to fill out a tax return are in the same envelope as the instructions.
Reply:I think the point is that you can have many

instances of an object, which is only coded

once. The example I can give you is I wrote

an algebra engine in C which needed to be

invoked several times and in C I had to make

several passes and then hd to go through a

"consolidation" process. When I translated

to C++ every time I wanted an instance I would

just "new" the object and each instance would

work concurrently.

What is the easiest way to learn programming language for begginers?
There is a pile of tutorials on every programming language online.

Heres a couple...

Please note: SQL is an XML application. You might want to start with the basics first and learn some HTML. Everything is pretty much starts with that, so its the best code to learn first. Practce an hour a day and you will get good.

Reply:Get onto a bookstore website and search for SQL Server 2000, a site like amazon will give good results and most times people who bought that item will give feedback on their experience of the item.
Reply:There is a lot of them. I am not a teacher but I Did teach myself. I think you should start learning basic concepts (database, tables, queries, Stored procedures, etc) and then move to Access and start creating objects on a database anyway SQL server is the same concept as Access with a lot of advanced features.

Help with Linear Programming, This is confusing for me!Can anyone help explain this.?

The bookholder company manufactors two types of bookcases out of oak and walnut.Model 01 requires 5 board feed of oak and 2 board feed of walnut.Model 02 requires 4 board ft. of oak and 3 board ft of walnut. A profit of $75 is made on each model 01 bookcase and a profit of $125 is made on each model 02 bookcase. The company has a supply of 1000 board ft of oak and 600 board ft of walnut. The company has orders for 40 model 01 bookcases and 50 model 02 bookcases. These orders indicate the minimum number the company must manufacture of each model.

a) write the set of constraints.

b) write the objective function.

c) graph the set of constraints.

d) determine the number of bookcases of each type the company should manufacture in order to maximize profits.

e)determine the maximum profit.

Help with Linear Programming, This is confusing for me!Can anyone help explain this.?
a) you need lots of variables of course. Usually people use x1, x2, x3.... Rename as needed.

Model01 %26gt;= 40

Model02 %26gt;= 50

oak %26lt;= 1000, %26gt;=0

walnut %26lt;= 600, %26gt;=0

b) the obective is what you want to maximize

z = Model01 * 75 + Model02 * 125

c) graphing constraints. You probably just want to graph the 2 woods, so you'll get a box 1000 x 600.

The rest, you should probably learn to do simplex. There's no other way than hammering it out. You can download free Lindo software at

http://www.lindo.com/downloads/

to check your answers if you can figure out the syntax. It certainly won't help you learn simplex though.

Lindo code:

max 75x1 + 125x2

st

x1%26gt;40

x2%26gt;50

x3%26gt;0

x4%26gt;0

x5%26gt;0

x6%26gt;0

5x1-x3=0

2x1-x4=0

4x2-x5=0

3x2-x6=0

x3+x5%26lt;1000

x4+x6%26lt;600

Result:

x1=40

x2=173

Maximal profit = 24625

How is a new web programming language written ?

I'm wondering how programmers develop new web programming languages because I want to learn how everything begins from the start. Let's say I'm planning to write a new language for the Web. How do I do this? Is there anyone who knows about the way web programming languages first appear ? I'm asking these questions because I'm particularly interested in the World Wide Web.

How is a new web programming language written ?
You can't write a new language without creating a new internet, which is fairly impossible for 1 person to do, but the way they started it in the beginning was HTML, for basic functions, CSS for the way everything looks, and binary code which tells the computer how to read it
Reply:Perhaps you aren't aware of just what an undertaking you are wanting to do.

Consider this. Your new language will have to work on whatever platform the user has. Your program will need to work on all ersions of operating systems and computers. It has to work on mainframes and pcs, Macs, Unix and Linux.

You will have to write that code and provide it to the computers that use your program. They will have to run it for it to work.

It will also have to work on the persons monitor. You have to consider graphics, fonts and resolution.

You will need to know how it works now in order to write something new that will work across the web.

The way it works now is the host sends out a package of information, say a web page. The recipient computer takes that package and converts it to something the computer understands

and then displays it.

To write a new language you will need to either conform to this method or write a new way of converting instructions across all

types of computers.

Each new method of programming is built on everything that has been done before. the Web has evolved to what it is now.

Until you know how it works you won't be able to improve it.

What IT career is the best to choose between a Programming or Networking?

I have done Graduation in computer Science? Right now very confused about which way to go.

Computer Programming OR Computer Networking?

Need Desperate Help Please?

What IT career is the best to choose between a Programming or Networking?
Programming makes a lot more money. The networking job market is flooded with applicants. The big networks like Cisco and Nortel laid off hundreds of staff a couple years ago. I would recommend programming for compensation, job opportunity and job growth. With programming your skills and job will evolve over time to what the technology requires. Networking will not have as much diversity.
Reply:networking - if you are good at networking several diffent computers runing different software and operating systems (ie having windows platforms working with apple/macs and linux/unix servers etc, and VOIP connections)

programming - if you want to create programs

both pay about hte same. its up to you where you want your skills applied.
Reply:Programming makes considerably more money.

What programming language should I learn in order to make games?

I want to learn how to create simple (very simple) video games. What programming language should I use, and how/where can I learn it? I'm starting from scratch, so how long will it take me to start cranking some things out? Or is it such a huge undertaking that I shouldn't even waste my time trying?

What programming language should I learn in order to make games?
A very good program to get you started with programming games and get you started with programming languages is Game Maker. http://gamemaker.nl After you have played around with that for a while, move on to a "real" programming language such as C++ (primarily the best choice for games) or Flash.
Reply:Well, if it were easy monkeys would be doing it.

Writing a video game from scratch is a huge undertaking. You will save yourself tons of time by using a publicly available gaming engine that takes care of most of the dirty work for you. However, this means that your task will be more about creating the graphical images rather than writing code.

As for language, C and/or C++
Reply:C++ is the daddy of them all and there are a wealth of free tutorials and compilers available

If you want something a bit easier to cut your teeth on look at flash and it's action script code
Reply:Well it is a huge undertaking, but whether it's a waste of your time or not is your decision. If you want a degree in computer science, which most companies require in order for you do be a game programmer for them, then you are going to have to take some very hard math courses. Vector Calculus is the one that almost killed me.
Reply:C/C++

Buy a book on game programming and see what you can do. Games are probably the hardest thing to program!

Good luck!
Reply:There are tools you can use to help you if you are just starting out. I think there's one simply called Video Game Designer that has basic libraries already done for you. Another option is to try using Macromedia Flash to design web based games. There are tons of tutorials all over the net on how to get started making games like Tic Tac Toe and then you can work up from there. If you're set on learning a proper programming language, C++ is still the language of choice for most game programmers. It can be a tough place to start though. Just take your time and be sure to learn the fundamentals first. Good luck!
Reply:most games nowadays use C++ and a little of them C#

What is the best program to help manage estimates and customers.?

I own a buisness that builds custom garage doors. Builders fax me drawings or pictures and we send back detailed estimates. I want a program I can save detailed estimates for future use instead of always re-entering almost the same data. I currently just cut and paste which leaves more room for mistakes. I would also like to be able to scan pictures, Estimates, final invoices, job measurements ect.... into customer folders to help organize our customers better. Is there a program out there that fits that description? Quick Books is good but only for the numbers part of it not the organizational side.

What is the best program to help manage estimates and customers.?
Have a look at QuickBooks Pro

and

ACT! 2006 for contacts

Good luck!

What program have you used and recommend for creating help files for software?

There seems to be 100s of programs that generate help files. I'd like to use something that generates searchable windows help, html help for posting online and downloadable pdf. Seems a lot of people like Adobe RoboHelp, but there is no trial and a license is $1000. Is this what you use and prefer or are there other packages that work well? Our software is desktop and online, written in C# and ASP.NET if that is pertinent.

What program have you used and recommend for creating help files for software?
I use Help and Manual which is inexpensive (I believe there is a free trial) and in my opinion VERY good. Its feature sheet is extensive and it can publish many types of help files (CHM, EBook, HTML, PDF etc.) from a single source.
Reply:I like Dr. Explain. It is simple to use, and isn't too expensive.

What do I do if I want to build a custom website but don't know any programming?

I want to create a website that can track user names, store data, and do other various unique things, basically whatever my imagination can conceive. How can I create the things I want on the site without any knowledge of html programming? Are there any companies that can help me do this?

What do I do if I want to build a custom website but don't know any programming?
There are a lot of companies out there who can do this thing for you. But you may spend a good amount of money. If you want a cheaper solution, check out the local colleges. If they have a program there where students learn about making pages, you might be able to sneak in a project like this for little or nothin.

Help with Linear Programming problem?

Reecca makes machine stitched quilts. It takes 36 hours and 8 yards of material to make a small quilt. It takes 24 hours and 12 yards of material to make a large quilt. She has at most 648 hours and 192 yards of material to use in making quilts. How many of each quilt can she make?

All I really need help with is the first question, It says "Identify your variables and grand totals".

I dont understand what to put for that.

Help with Linear Programming problem?
I read this as follows:

x is the number of small quilts made

y is the number of large quilts made

Set up your constraint equations so that

648 %26gt;= 36x + 24 y

192%26gt;= 8x + 12y

And try to maximize x + y

The answer should be x = 13.2 and y = 7.2

This fully utilizes both resources.

What programming language are learning or have learned and why?

What's the use of the programming language? What is it mainly for?

I first learnt html, now I just got through experiencing javascript and have moved onto java (doing java applets as of yet). Although I didn't master any of them, I have a pretty good idea of which is all about and how to manipulate each.

What programming language are learning or have learned and why?
Programming languages are for writing programs.

Java is the most portable (can be ran on many different operating systems.) .Net is the most popular, simply because it's the most powerful language for programming for Windows. However, like Java, .Net applications will run on any operating system that implements the .Net framework... but there are few of these, and I think they're pretty much all Microsoft.

Within .Net, there are a few languages to choose from: Visual Basic, J#, C#, and C++... all of which pretty much do the same stuff.

Also, HTML is -NOT- a programming language... it's a markup language... something that doesn't run, but is rather a language of descriptive tags... a very stuctured way to store data. Then you've got your scripting languages... like PHP, Perl, ASP, VBScript, JScript/JavaScript, etc.... which is more like programming in that it contains actual instructions as opposed to just information, but scripts have to be processed each time they're run. Then you've got your actual programming languages, which are compiled into the lowest-level format that the operating system or application framework can directly run.

Something like that.

Personally, for Windows applications, I like VB .Net because of how well it's integrated into the development environment. For mobile devices, I use a text editor to program in Java2 Mobile Edition. I'm not a big fan of writing desktop apps in Java (Sun's) because the windows, controls, and dialogs aren't standard for the operating system on which they're running... they always look funny and unprofessional.
Reply:Java the best option

practice more and more to command
Reply:I have trouble saying I've mastered any language... there is always more to learn. However, I would say I'm knowledgable with (in no particular order) C, C++, Java, Visual Basic.NET, Perl, and Ruby. You can also say PHP, Javascript, SQL, and XML if you want to call them programming languages.

They all serve their purpose and for programming in general, I like to think they've all given me knowledge and insight on how to be a better programmer. When I try to do some hobby programming, I usually use C++.
Reply:Basic, Cobol, Assembler, RPG I,II %26amp; III, PASCAL, VBScript, JavaScript, and C

A language simply provides an easy way of coding things...

instead of writing Assembly which is the closest you can get to raw machine code...you can use a language that will usually compile to machine code....

Which programming language would be good for Middle School kids to learn?

Our school is considering offering computer programming as an elective class. We would want to choose a language that wouldn't be extremely hard but would also be relevant to 12 or 13 year olds. We don't want something that's going to be extinct in a few years. Which language should we go with?

Which programming language would be good for Middle School kids to learn?
I would also go with some sort of combination JavaScript because you don't need any sort of complicated tools to use it - just a text editor and a web browser. It's also likely to be around forever. In this case, you would probably have to teach them HTML alongside of JavaScript, but that shouldn't be too overwhelming.

I also suggest Adobe's ActionScript 3.0 because it is quite similar to the next version of JavaScript which will be out within the next few years. Adobe provides a free tool (the Flex Framework) to anyone who wants to download it. Unfortunately, this may be a bit complicated to use. Fortunately, they also provide their premier tool, Flex Builder, free for educational purposes here http://www.flexregistration.com/ .

Good luck.
Reply:I(am 15) started programming this year as an elective subject and I just love it. I am learning Java and the actual website has a forum where you can ask for help over the holidays, there will always be someone who will help but not give you the answer flat out. There is an condensed version of the program called jGrasp. It is great for starting out. Use Java you wont regret it.
Reply:Its not a programming language (its a scripting language)

But HTML is so easy, JavaScript is also cool but a little more complex.

HTML and JavaScript are used for webpages.
Reply:I am unsure of this. Maybe something, that is simple. Text script. Light HTML...

Are there any programs to help law enforcement officers buy their first home?

Hi! My husband is a Correctional Officer with the State of California. We are ready to buy our first home, and we were wondering if anyone knew of any programs to help us with the down payment, closing costs, etc?

I know HUD has the officer next door program, but there are no homes currently available for it. But any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Are there any programs to help law enforcement officers buy their first home?
I am also in Ca. L.E. and am not aware of any such programs. That being said, it does not mean that there are not any. I would check with your employee Credit Union if you have one, also check with PERS. I am always getting mailings from them about programs for LEOs. Talk to your bank, some offer loans for government employees. Your municipality may also have programs you are not aware of. Good luck, home ownership is not just a job it's an adventure!
Reply:Not because you're law enforcement in particular, but there are numerous "first time buyer" programs available through all banks and mortgage companies

What is the best computer programming program for a starter?

I am a 14 year old, who wants to learn computer programming on my own. What is the best program that teaches you and lets you do it?

What is the best computer programming program for a starter?
(EDIT)

Visual Basic 6 .NET does not exist. There is a VB .NET 2005. Microsoft no longer supports VB6. It's not obselete, as is C, though C is not a Microsoft language.

(/EDIT)

The post telling you to start with C and move to C++ made me laugh. C++ is the new standard, and is just C "++" some. LoL. Know what I mean?

Any programming community (e.g. GameDev.net) will tell you to switch to C++ if you are using C, unless you are taking a school course that requires you to use C.

Why start with something like BASIC? I started with C++. A good IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is Bloodshed Dev-C++.

And web design is not "programming." That's a common misunderstanding. HTML is not a programming language.

But check out Dev-C++ (in the source links) and go from there. You can program using Notepad and a C++ compiler if you wanted to. But an IDE makes things so much easier. And when you're comfortable with C++ (believe me, it takes quite some time ... hope you have patience!! =D) and comfortable with Dev-C++ as an environment, you can download the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005 Express Editions for free (also in the source links).

You MUST have a whole lot of patience in order to get into programming and actually stick with it. And don't go in with a "big-head" attitude that you're going to write the next piece of the Doom or Quake franchises.

I made that mistake, but I learned from it. And now, about 8 years later, I can do more than I ever thought of with C++. Plus, I also taught myself C# and Java.

But never move on to the next step until you're comfortable with (and understand) what you're currently working on. I have list a website in the sources for a good beginner's tutorial (though I don't think it's quite up to the standards, but that's okay). And GameDev.net has a GREAT community.

I hope this helps! =)
Reply:I suggest you to learn C, why???

because many languages are liked C.

From C point, you can go to Java, C# and go to PHP simply, their syntax are so same as in C. Then from C you can go to code in LINUX and UNIX simply too.
Reply:i think u must start with C programming language

After that C++

Thanks
Reply:don't dismiss C as being obsolete or not worth learning. there is a reason a lot of schools require you to learn it before C++ (and usually after java). if you need to write fast and efficient code you would want to do it in C. if you are doing coding that requires something that needs to be fast, small, and quick, such as code in graphics/game programming, no pro will use C++. also, C is "harder" in the sense it requires you to understand exactly what is going on under the hood more so then in C++ (unless you write pure C code and compile it with a C++ compiler, in which case why bother with C++).

with that said, i probably wouldn't want to learn C first. C++ maybe but probably not. i'd go with Java since it is platform independent, very, very well documented, and sort of "forces" you into good programming practices if you are a beginner.
Reply:I agree, Basic, particularly visual basic, is the way to go fora starting programmer.

Also, I believe learning even simpler object code, like Flash Action Script, can teach about the fundamental ideas AND provide a framework for text and graphics that are self contained.

Once someone has learned to turn out decent flash output, Visual Basic should be an easy next step.

Myself, I learned GFA basic (The leastest with the mostest) and after that, almost everything seemed accessible.
Reply:Arjun K may I call you son.

Son here is link for Microsoft Visual Basic 6 link. I would advise you to learn VB6 dot net.

How much do time do you spend programming at work?

I just wanted to roughly know how much other people spend their time programming at work if you are a developer. I am a Java developer and I spend about 98% of the time coding. I was just wondering because a professor I had in college said that developers only spend about 25% of their time actually coding. One reason I may spend a lot of time coding is that the work is usually assigned to individuals rather than teams. Here are some questions to get a feel of how other companies work: How much time do you spend coding? What are other activities that take a large percentage of your time? What is the size of the company you work for? Do you feel like you work on projects as a team or individually? Feel free to leave any other comments that pertain from your experience.

How much do time do you spend programming at work?
I dont think your professor was 100% correct. If you just got the job then you will most likely spend the majority of the time coding and as you get more experienced and familiar with the companys system you may end up doing more analytical work such as developing a database, analysing data, meetings etc.. After some time you start to think that even a trained monkey can program so they usually give those tasks to less experienced people so the more you move up the less programming you are likely to do. Also, it sometimes takes longer to test your work than it takes to program it.
Reply:There is a difference between "coding" and "programming". Most programmers are really programmer / analysts. They should spend a lot of time analyzing. They also test, debug, test again, train users, write help screens, meet with users, watch business processes, read professional journals, goof off answering YA posts on the corporate T-100 line and so forth. If you are devoting 98% of your 40 hours a week to grinding out Java code, you must be a regular coding machine. Do you have others who set the requirements, design the systems, test, debug and so forth? Or did you count that as "coding"?

25% seems about right if your professor meant to distinguish between tasks, as I did.
Reply:It really depends on the nature of the company and how the company works.

I work in an environment where no body really cares rats @@$$$ about computers... but without computers or internal programs... all hell will break loose.

We do have a team of IT guys here.. but not enough for 300 users. So I go here and there to support the IT guys.. which makes me 60:40 on develop/maintaining:IT Troubleshoot...

...not considering all the meetings and paper works and overtimes...

As to my friend.. who works in a strict development environment...

Most of time he spend his time coding... other time studies the languages.

Sounded like 80% coding, 15% studying, and 5% meetings.

Another friend who works in a QA environment...

According to him he spends 100% on coding 100% on meetings and 100% hearing the development team Biaatching in his ears 100% hearing his team Biaatching about the developers... which is a very team oriented environment.

Most* development environment is individual based...

because it's hard for multiple people to create portions of a code and expect everything to work perfectly once the code is put together.
Reply:I create web apps for my work,, i spend %26lt; 10% design and 90% programming (including debugging). I work for a university which has 500 employees. But as usual other things which distract you from your real job come inbetween. I work mostly individually
Reply:I am Sr. EAI Consultant in CMM5 Level company , working at Client site. We are sopenidng maximum time in Designing. Like Functional Designs and Technical design. If a Design is good then a Deveopelr can develop in few Hrs. We always propely document the Designs and then Send it to Developer to develop. So The way we work is

1%26gt; Functional Design : Collection Business Requirements

2%26gt; Technical Design : Converting Funcrtionalui in to Technical

3%26gt; Coding (Code)

4%26gt; Testing (UT , ST , AT , etc)

the first two parts always take 70% of time .

and about the coding in a day , when u r in job then Ur Team lead decideds or may be you decide ;-)
Reply:hmm ok i do about 70% coding and 30% design. other activities include graphics and animation, web design, and screwing around on yahoo answers - lol j/k - well not really... :)

the size of my company is pretty big, maybe a few hundred folks. we have project coordinators so i feel like i work as a team with them, but not really with the other designers because i work remotely and we kinda just do what we're all told.

that was a fun question, it was actually relevant to what i do! yay! back to "work"!
Reply:I'd say I spend between 35% and 60% of my time actually writing code (web applications,) depending upon the week and the time of the year. The rest is spent on design, testing, debugging, and managing the network here. I work for a small non-profit, and if it plugs into the wall, I am responsible for it...
Reply:I'm a Sr Java Developer for a medium sized company and I code about 50% of the time. But it's lopsided...maybe 12% one day and I have to stay late and code 100% another. Depends on the projects that are going on. My other time is spent doing research on technologies, going over documentation, meetings, or being just plain bored.

What is the best route to take with finding a programming language that suites game development ?

I understand that there are lots of this questions already posted, but I am in need for a serious answer.

I started out with Game Maker back in 2004, and feel that it DOES produce the results I like, but I do feel extremely limited, as I like to program, but also have an artistic vision for my games. I also feel embarrassed that I am working with such a cheap means of programming.

I guess to continue with my answer, that my question that has come up in numerous ways, is that what programming language is the best towards producing games. And no, it doesn't have to be "easy to learn" (although it should be possible to grasp rudimentary concepts and such) I own C++ without fear by Brian Overland, Game programming all in one third edition by Johnathan S. Harbour, and Beginning game programming by Jonathon Harbour.

Reinstating the question again, as I have only been working with 2d games and haven't made the leap towards 3d.

is there something wrong with c++? 2d graphics shud be ez with direct3d or open gl
Reply:There is never a "best". There is only pros and cons. Ive worked in the game publishing industry and can tell you that games are written in anything you want.

Most would say C++ but to me thats a module language. Big companies would want you to have it. But thats because they have many programmers in cubicles working on a piece of the game. Everything has to work when its all plugged together. (or Java if its an online game)

If you are going to be the only one working on it from beginning to end then there are other choices. They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

But if C++ is no big deal for you then its probably the safest answer. Let us know what you dont like about C++ and we might recommend something else
Reply:C++ is pretty much standard fare anymore when it comes to game development. (And whoever said it is prone to memory leaks clearly hasn't written proper C++ code). There are a ton of game engines - some free, most not - to choose from that require a C++ compiler.

The best place to go for Game Development information, tutorials, forums, etc. is:

http://www.gamedev.net/

Also, keep in mind that 2D is a special case of 3D. Any 3D engine is more than capable of making a 2D game...or a hybrid.
Reply:I think C++ is the undisputed best game programming language. Java is a good one too but it is not as user-friendly. I still think the language should be chosen depending on what game you are writing. Anyways here are some pro and cons of common game programming languages:

Assembly

Fastest, low overhead

Error-prone, slow development, difficult for novices, not portable

C

Extremely fast, widely known, numerous tools Not OO, no GC, prone to memory leaks

C++

OO, very fast, widely used, numerous tools No GC, prone to memory leaks

Object Pascal

OO, very fast, easy to read and learn, very portable (Free Pascal)

Not widely used

C#

Very OO, RAD language, easy to use

Must be just-in-time compiled when run, memory hog

Java

Very OO, easy to use, portable

Can be slow (though JITers are now common), not suitable for console programming

Eiffel, Smalltalk Ada, etc.

Fringe game languages,

few game development tools

Scripting languages like Lua, Python, etc. Often used for gameplay scripting, but not for the bulk of the game code itself
Reply:The best industry standard software package for game design today is 3D GameStudio. You can read about it here:
