How much programming knowledge is required to create an internet company?

Specifically, I am referring to the giant companies like Facebook and Myspace. How much programming knowledge and/or experience is required to create those websites? Could a college CS major do something like that?

Truely, you'll need knowledge of all of the above and also probably shell scripting knowledge and so on, a Computer Science Major should be able to get the job done, as during all of those studies you'll have the opportunity to work with each piece, php, mysql, web servers (which should involve shell scripting depending on which servers you work with), html, etc.
Reply:HTML - easy to learn, essential for website creation.

Java - not required but useful.

SQL - for a myspace-like site, I would recommend this.

Flash - to make web sites really fancy.
Reply:Myspace and Facebook was made by servers and Internet languages maybe like HTML.

HTML is very important for a company. If you are planning on going to school for that, make sure you are willing to go do some "company" classes and loads of Programming Classes as well. You will probably need alot of knowledge if it is going to be just you. If not, then you could probably get people to work for you and do some of the programming for you.
Reply:Well for a site like those you will need some sort of database knowledge and also knowledge of a scripting language such as PHP or ASP. When you know those it would be possible to make a site like the above. Whether it is a sucess or not depends on your level of experience and the time you put into it.
