I'm starting college in January. I'm majoring in Game and Simulation Programming. What are the perks? What is the salary? What is the work environment like?
What am I looking forward to in the game and simulation programming field?
It about the same as many programming jobs, everything depends on your employer, your skill your knowledge and the quality of your work product.
The market tends to be diverse. One friend was working from home, picked his own hours, and made good money. Some did it part time and on the side and made little money. Others worked either for the government or as a government contractor in a research environment where they develop game and simulation software for use by the DOD and their contractors. At one time they had the best toys (now days I think there just average) and made good money doing what if they didn't have to make a living, they do for free. About the only bad things was thier work environment (ugly offices with strange odors).
I have been discouraging people from entering the programming field, but I do believe that gaming and simulations is one area which will continue to grow.
