just thinking about doing it on my 99 ranger xlt 4.0 5 speed

What does ecu programming do for your engine and does it help?
Re-programming your ECU most likely advances the timing. Meaning, your spark plugs ignite a little sooner than before. The intention is to have the pistons moving back down after their upstroke a little faster. If you do this, i would recommend using the highest octane gasoline you can buy at the pump. This will prevent preignition caused by the advanced timing. Also, it may program the engine to give a little more fuel during each combustion cycle, find out if this is the case and if so, get a higher flowing air filter and ditch your catlytic converter, if emissions in your area allow this. Good luck -
