Want to enter a career in the programming field, where should I start?

I have absolutely no programming or even web design experience, but I'd like to get my feet wet, and see if I like it.

Natuarally, I'd like to start of with the most versatile and "base" language, if there is one.

The classes I've seen online are Java for the Beginner and C ++ for the beginner, which of these is better or do you have any other sugestions? How do a build a great career?

Want to enter a career in the programming field, where should I start?
My suggestion would be to download the free Visual C# express IDE from Microsoft. They have a great set of tutorials for learning the language as well. Some are written, some are video:

They have paths for learning either web or windows development, and it's all free.

The skills that you will learn in knowing Visual C# translate directly into marketable skills. Also, C# is a modern language that will teach you valuable skills that are useful for learning any other language later. Most of all, C# is fun. :) You can do just about anything you'd like in C#. Windows apps, web apps, games, etc. :)

Check it out.
Reply:Berekly webcasts cover C and Java. View the Computer Science (CS) lectures. Check out other semesters by the drop down comboBox on the upper right handside. You can use netbeans for both java and c programming. But setting up for C in Netbeans requires cygwin, if you are using windows.

I like C# Express and VWD Express from microsoft. Microsoft now has videos to teach you how to program. The SDK and videos are now free.
Reply:hi this kapil from Delhi(India),I'd like to suggest 2 u that if u want to go in prog. field to make ur great career as u told then , u hav 2 start as beginners.

then for this , u hav to do C ,after it u hav to do C++(Bcoz these are the basic languages ),C will make ur concept for programming as will as your Logic(which are the essent parts of any programmings). After it u can choose your field(Like java or .net) in which u want to make your career.

once again remember that for s/w field u must hav logical mind ,which you have(Its looking from your question).

bye Friend.
Reply:I am a web developer by trade. I have done it for the past 14 years.

Different programming languages are for different programming field. If you want to try out web development, you can try HTML first and then ASP .NET and ColdFusion. As far as ASP .NET goes, as long as you have Windows, you are pretty much all set. For ColdFusion though, it is tag-based, which is similar to HTML; whereas ASP .NET, it is script based.

For desktop programming, you can try VB .NET.
